Shop Summary:
Moderate, but not great selection of bikes. A small handful of closeout bikes that are actually cheap enough allow you to buy something at an LBS without getting ripped off - full retail is for suckers. I was in the shop for about twenty minutes last Sunday - looking at a Roubaix on closeout, and looking for prices on new Gary Fisher bikes as I had a sizeable warranty credit from Fisher for two cracked frames. There were three employees in the shop, which was unfortunately always one less than the number of customers - and these guys are not out to win any races. Rather than sell me a $1500 Roubaix, these folks were too busy selling $300 Huffy clones and cruiser bikes to kids and local housewives. I ended up browsing sitting patiently on a bench for five minutes waiting for some help. When the one salesman who seemed comfortable stepping out from behind the shop counter skipped over me to help a married couple that came in about ten minutes after I did, I left a note on the shop counter asking them to call me with their best prices on three Fisher models. Of course, I never heard from the shop. My questions about the Roubaix for sale? I stopped by SMC (South Mountain Cycles), where a staff member offered to help me as I walked in the door. Simply by describing the paint on the Roubaix, SMC was able to tell me the year, model, features, and differences between the 08's and 09's. SMC then showed me an incredible custom 07' that it still had in stock at $2500. Sorry Bike Barn - hope you found another buyer because SMC has my business. I cannot speak about the wrenches in the shop - I build custom bikes so I have no need.

Other Comments:
Sadly, my experience at the bike barn is fairly typical. Most sales staff can repeat a manufacture's marketing, but cannot explain what, if any, substance lies behind the marketing. People exalt the local bike shop the way they anthropologists like to romanticize the lives of native peoples. Unfortunately, with sales tax, overhead costs, etc., the LBS just cannot compete with e-tailers and the secondary bike market (ebay and mtbr.com ads) on price. In 2005 I built a custom Turner 5 spot with XO drivetrain, King headset and hubs, etc. for just over $2300. The bike would have easily retailed in the $5000+ range. Why in god's name would you fork over another $3000? So you can feel good about keeping your LBS in the black? Unless you are one of those riders who brings your bike to the shop to fix a flat tire, the LBS generally doesn't add any value to the transaction to justify paying more. If you want a new custom build with manufacturer's warranty at a fraction of retail, you can drop me a note.

Shop Summary:
Very good inventory of mountain and road bikes. Shop carries Trek, Specialized, and Gary Fisher. Even carries Lynskey bikes if you are into Ti candy. it is conveniently located at the corner of Indian School Road and 36th St. It is convenient to N. Central Phoenix, Biltmore area, S. Scottsdale, and of course, Arcadia. Shop has a significant inventory of accessories to go with the bikes. For a LBS, they have an outstanding selection of clothing, both men's and women's.

Customer Service:
Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Mary the manager is patient and really tries provide you with products you need with value and functionality in mind. Chuck is the main shop mechanic and I seriously doubt there is a better bike mechanic in Arizona. I know a few cyclists that use Chuck as the last hope for hard to solve problems. They can do custom fitting. If you leave your bike with them, they give you an idea of when to expect it back, and usually they get back with you sooner.

Other Comments:
The shop has a fun Sunday AM shop ride and is a consistent sponsor of the MS150. It has been around since the 1950s and is quietly one of the best LBS's in the southwest. Although I live two blocks from another LBS and within 2 miles of two others, I opt to travel the 6 miles to Bike Barn.

Shop Summary:
This shop is awesome. They have a wide variety of mountain, road and cross bikes. They sell, Trek, Gary Fisher, and Specialized bikes.

Customer Service:
The customer service is excellent. I bought a low-end road bike 2 months ago. Every time I go back, the guy who sold me my bike, remembers who I am and asks how I am enjoying the ride. They referred to an excellent bike club.

They will order anything you need that they don't have at the store.
