Encina and Clayton Bicycle Center are the type of shops with limitless boundaries. Family owned since 1974. These two shops are well known for there commitment to being the best all around bike source in the bay area. In a day of online scams mail order blowouts and corporate owned retailers these shops are a firm reminder of why it's important to support small bike shops and family owned business. In the bike industry shops like this are a dying breed. Many of the employees have been there since before Mt. bikes were even invented, so they have a great understanding of suspension design and the evolution of mountain bikes. Amongst the staff you will find experts in road, mountain, bmx, recreation and youth bikes. Every member of the staff rides so you can count on an educated opinion. They only carry what they would use themselves. Both shops are also very well known for there stellar repair work. They arent shy, bring in your old ten speed for a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, bring in your shock for rebuild, or just bring in the kids bikes for a tune up. Basically if you want a professional opinion about your bike, doesnt matter if it's high end or not, they can take care of you with a smile. They also have a wharehouse system so getting the right bike and size is a lot easier then where most stores would have to wait to order. They promote all forms of riding and don't limit themselves with any genre of bicycle. Are you feeling discomfort while you ride? Make an appointment with them for a fitting and make your bike enjoyable to ride. They are dedicated to making your bike ride a better experience. Both shops are located near the Mt. Diable state park which is known as some of the toughest climbing and most insane descents on earth. Ask the guys at the shop for directions to some of there favorite trails. These two shops are one of specialized and treks top 100 dealers so they will have a good supply of both brands and usually there whole line. Back in the late 70's you could find trek road frames and specialized tires in stock and now these companies are huge. They have remained dedicated to these two brands since the beggining of there conseption and they believe that as a whole these brands are superior to all other brands. They also have been one of santa cruz bikes top dealers since there conseption and everyone knows how big that company has become. So check them out. Ride to live!

Shop Summary:
I've lived near the Clayton shop for the past 10 years and have always been able to get parts when needed. I purchased two bikes for my kids in the past 5 years. Since I do my own work, I can't say I spend any service dollars there. The Encina shop nearby is larger with a bit better selection of bikes and supplies. They also have very knowledgable mechanics who enjoy finding you that hard to find part. Go there for used parts, they hold on to everything. Got a sweet Specialized Dbl Butted Rigid fork for a 12pk of Pale Ale. All in all, two good shops that stay in business by doing things pretty well.

Shop Summary:
One of the few area shops I can comfortably recommend to others for purchases and service.

Customer Service:
Good. The owner is nearly almost there and the mechanics/salesmen are all well experienced with a couple being there more than a decade. Their prices are fair, they do good quality repairs, and they give accurate times on when work will be completed. I do the vast majority of my own work, but for stuff I don't/can't, I take my bike there.

Other Comments:
I think the most telling statement about the shop was when I was waiting to buy a part several years ago, the mechanic was telling a Mom who brought in her son's BMX bike that something broke on "We offer lifetime service on the bikes we sell and I would rather you bring the bike in once a week than once a year so we can make sure things like this don't break."

Shop Summary:
decent selection, conveniently located, but.....

Customer Service:
i have a problem when a shop not only doesn't fix stuff that you take the bike in for, but also charges way over list for parts plus labor. i had basically bad experience with this shop and won't go back.
