This shop is owned by Chuck Hoefer who came to Carlsbad to work for Masi fileing lugs and frames. After Masi shut down shop Chuck bought this shop, that was in 1977. Since then Chuck has strived to be a real bike shop not a bike store. In the early eighties Chuck got into riding off road and at one time if you wanted a mountian bike this is the only place in southern California where you could find one. At this shop you can get a bike brazed, filed, tapped, faced, chased, tuned, painted, and oh yea Chuck is a great wheel builder who can build you anything from the superlight race wheelset to the super Knarly downhill wheels and he can solve most peoples wheel problems. This shop has sent people like Leo Castellon, Brian Lucas and Mike Varley out into the bike industry where they have built or designed bikes that you or your kids have probably ridden. This shop tends to keep their employees around for years and don''t be surprised to see someone from another shop in here looking for some hard to find part or just hanging out. Oh yea this shop can find or order just about anything. So if your looking for a real bike shop this is it.

Shop Summary:
I'm still waiting to see how many years of lube has been soaking in the ~beard~ of this owner-mechanic.
VERY EXPENSIVE: be it merchandise; and labor/service rates.
But Fred of Leucadia Cyclery in the neighboring city be just as good if not better.

Customer Service:
Like the stock market; variable each day.
Unforecastable.

Other Comments:
Chuck's groucho self -- he belong 100% in the shop.
Be it that he train his employees well enough for their knowledge.
Does he work just as well on VWs, than on bikes.??
Hey --- that business be too competitive for him.

Shop Summary:
This place is the best! Old school and all about bikes and riding. Road, single speed customs, mountain with quite an eclectic mix of bikes around. There is stuff in every corner and it's cool just checking out the bikes in the shop if you're waiting for Chuck. Chuck is the ultimate character and he is grizzly around the gills which is his charm. Straight up with no bullsh&*t. This is the ultimate local bike shop and you're missing out if you haven't checked it out. If you love riding and love bikes this place is for you. He is known for his wheels. If you want a custom handbuilt set that are bomb proof let Chuck build you up a set.

Customer Service:
I have been building up a custom mountain bike from scratch and had Chuck do some of the work I could not do my self. All the work he did is top notch and meticulous. He stands by what he does.
