Cross Country Rider Shop Summary: THE place to rent a mountain bike on Maui! Customer Service: Above and beyond the call of duty. Opened the shop early on a day when I had a serious family time crunch so I could get a ride in. Other Comments: If you're going to mountain bike on Maui here's rule 1 - Go to Crater Cycles. Rule 2 is see rule 1. I called Paul (the owner) a few days before I arrived on Maui and explained I wanted to get in a day of cross country riding and a day of downhilling on Haleakala. He told me he could set me up. And did he ever. Bikes (I used a different bike on each day), trail suggestions and a group ride down the volcano. Mahalo to Noah, Dane and Kylie. I only had two days to ride while on Maui and they were two great days of riding thanks to this shop. Maholo Paul and I can't wait to come back.

Weekend Warrior Shop Summary: The shop is nicely located near the airport in Maui. I rented a bike to swap with my rental car on vacation. They had a good selection of differernt bike styles and gear. Great knowledgeable and professional shop. This is not your typical big bike shop that carries everything. They specialize in MOUNTAIN bikes. Customer Service: As their slogan goes.. "It is all about the ride!" Their main concern is clearly that you have a good ride. I checked out another shop first and was disappointed when I was treated like a dollar sign, so i turned around and walked out and went right over to Crater Cycles. I was in Maui on vacation and rented a bike to ride across the island and while there and also scheduled a ride down the crater on Skyline trail (a must). The shop owner made sure I was best set up for both types of rides. HE gave me great advice for both rides. They are laid back and clearly understand their customers. I had the opportunity to ride with locals who are very happy with the shop. The ride down was incredible, we stuck together. I would not have seen all the great trails without thier guidance. Also, another vacationer was hurt on the ride down and the shop owner guiding us handled the situation beautifully, getting him down the mountain. Other Comments: My only complaint is that I did not get more of an oportunity to ride with these guys, or buy more from this shop.

Downhiller Shop Summary: Horrible experience, rude people, avoid this place!
We found Crater Cycles through several references that said it was a great place to rent bikes and go on trails on Haleakala. I called about a week before our trip to Maui and spoke with Paw, who I believe is the shop owner. He indicated that he would arrange a trip for us to ride with him down the crater on several off road trails. They would take care of everything, including drop off and pick up, bikes, equipment, etc. for $110 apiece. He proposed a day and time for us to meet, which we confirmed was good for us. He took our credit card to hold the reservation and said to call him when we were on the island to touch base. We arrived in Maui on Saturday night, with the trip scheduled for 3pm on Tuesday. I called the shop Monday afternoon around 3 and was told that Paw had already left for the day. The person I spoke with answered my questions about how long the ride was, etc. said we were good to go. I told him that we would arrive at the shop between 2:30 and 3:00 the next day. When we arrived at the shop, stoked for our ride, Paw was there. We told him that we were there for our ride, and he stared at us with a dumb look and said, "I thought you guys weren't coming." "Why would you think that?" we said. "We called yesterday and spoke with Scott, and he said everything was good to go."
Paw then went through a series of lame excuses... the driver already cancelled, we hadn't heard from you, etc. He asked if we could reschedule for another day! When I reminded him that we had confirmed for 3 pm that day, he actually took an angry tone and started to yell at me, at which point we walked out.
While we were there another woman was having trouble renting a bike fo her son because she had seen an ad for a $45 rental, but when she arrived at the shop she was told they didn't have anything in that price range and didn't know what she was talking about. I cannot understand how a place like this stays in business when they consistently promise things they do not deliver. I would definetely avoid this shop. Customer Service: Horrible, rude. Bad attitude from the top down. Don't follow through with their commitments. Other Comments: This was a huge scar on our trip ~ the one thing my husband wanted to do on Maui was mountain bike down the crater and Crater Cycles screwed it up.
