Breakaway Bicycles
Breakaway has three stores...one in Portage (next to Kalamazoo, one in Muskegon, and one in Grand Haven. Primarily Trek, Fisher, and Lemond, they also carry a limited selection of Specialized bikes. They also have a great selection of fitness equipment and cross-country skis.
Shop Summary: I'm writing about the Muskegon store. They shop is clean & well run. The shop has everything from exercise equipment to the latest in MT. bikes and Road bikes. They also have an area for BMX'ers & stunt bikes.
Customer Service: As far as service, they are great. Eric builds some of the best wheelsets around. They are prompt and will order you anything you need. I have bought my last two bikes from them and they have provided me with excellent service.

Shop Summary: They have a fairly nice selection of bikes but a somewhat limited selection of accessories. I am not an average sized guy, so the fact that they didn't have any clothing in my size was disappointing, but not too surprising. They also have skis and exercise equipment, but I am not an expert at those, so I don't know if they have a good selection or not.
Customer Service: It has been kind of hit or miss. The first time I went there I was pretty sure I wanted to buy a bike that day. I probably stood around for 15 minutes before anyone approached me to ask if I need help. The guy that did finally help me seemed to answer my questions as if they were stupid questions and mixed in what seems to be a problem with pro-shops of all kind, not just cycling, he kept attempting to sound extremely knowledgeable and technical by throwing big words at me, even though I told him several times that I was a noobie. He was also half-helping me and half-talking to a friend that came in, so I decided not to buy and do a little more research.
I came back a few weeks later, thinking maybe i would buy a bike, maybe not. I was there maybe a minute or two and a guy approached me and asked me if I needed any help. He spent about an hour with me, helped me figure out what size I needed, told me the differences between each of the bikes in terms I could understand and didn't try to rush me though the process. I was very pleased and ended up buying a 2007 Gary Fisher Wahoo from him. I think his name was Dave S., or at least that is the name on my receipt and I am pretty
Other Comments: -customer service continued-
he was the one that rung me up as well. A very nice experience. He even helped me load it into the car and printed me some local trail maps.
A few weeks ago i went in to get a small frame pump. People that walked in after me were approached for help, but I was ignored the whole time. I found the pump I wanted on my own and headed to the front counter to check out. Nobody was there so I went to the service counter. The guy there was very nice, answered some questions I had about tubes and valves and seemed friendly.
So again, I guess it is who you get and is sometimes hit or miss. Some employees customer service rating is 0, while others are 5+++, so I give it a 3

Shop Summary: Is a great shop. I travel to the Kalamazoo regular in the year for my work. And love the Breakaway. I race roller-ski, and very much admire shops with expert roller-ski help. The Breakaway never will disappoint. Selection of V2-aero gear is broad and wide-spread; top gear and fine price are customary.
Customer Service: At the Breakaway, one can realize expert and professional service. The roller-ski experts have top knowledge in all roller-ski aspects possible. But that is not all! The Breakaway is not all business; workers here are your friends. Gracious help and kind persons. Obrigado Breakaway!
