Shop Summary:
this shop has a lot of high end road stuff. of course, it sells a good deal of hybrids and "city comfort bikes" to your friends' moms and your wimpy older brother, but it does a lot of traffic in BLING fancy stuff; orbea, pinarello, carrera, etc. lot's of serious yuppie races talking shop inside with the staff. good looking, with a wide selection of clothing, components and videos.

Customer Service:
the guys who do sales (who are essentially working the "front" of the shop) are some of my least favorite in the NYC bike shop scene. some of them, particularly the fat black man, are really officious and dismissive, eager from the moment you get in to tell you why your ascertainment of your bike's problem is wrong. not friendly, mostly snobby.
over the course of the last three years, i spent four or five hundred dollars at their shop, usually within short timespans of each purchase. bringing in my dad's C-40 or my girlfriend's fancy track bike or my Jamis Xenith, i was rarely treated with courtesy. if i drop dough at a shop repeatedly and introduce myself the first three times, i expect the dudes to at least acknowledge that i'm a regular customer, even if they can't remember my name. the prices they charge are just not commensurate with the quality of the experience. they need to remember that the customer is doing them a favor, not the other way round.

why get the short end?

there are two other MUCH better shops right in that neighborhood.

for high end work on expensive stuff, go to Imbert at MASTER BIKE SHOP on 77th btwn Broadway and Amsterdam (MASTERBIKESHOP.com 212 580 2355)

for excellent, friendly service on more proletarian bikes, or if you're looking for old, hard to find bits and pieces, see Eddie at Eddie's bicycle shop, 84th street and amsterdam (212 580 2011) he knows everything, especially about old bikes, and he does good welding on busted steel. plus he let's you hang out in the shop and watch.
