Velo NYC

(From the web site):
NYC Velo is a different kind of bike shop. Opened in May 2005, it is a shop owned and staffed by cyclists, for cyclists. All NYC Velo staff are bike professionals and are dedicated to offering the City’s highest quality customer service.

We are a small, family-owned business catering to commuters, messengers, recreational, and serious cyclists. NYC Velo carries road, mountain, cyclocross, hybrid, singlespeed, and fixed gear bikes.

We believe a bike shop should be more than just a store - it should be a place for cyclists. NYC Velo is proud to have the only bike lounge in Manhattan, where cyclists can hang out, read a magazine, and enjoy free coffee and bagels.

Our knowledgeable staff will help you select and size the right bicycle for you, whether you race, commute or just bike for fun and exercise. We will ensure that your bike is fitted properly so that you have the best ride possible. You can choose from a wide variety of styles and brands including Scott, Felt, Kona, Look, and Bianchi.

We sell parts and accessories that really work, and we know they work because we use them. In addition to sales, we offer bike repair and storage services. Our trained mechanics can quickly and accurately fix virtually any bicycle ailment as well as professionally install components.

Our highest priority is to deliver superior customer service by catering to each customer’s needs, offering helpful service and advice, and treating each customer as a valued member of the NYC Velo community.

At NYC Velo, we believe that cycling is about more than machinery, it’s about being involved in the community through outreach and advocacy. NYC Velo is active in local cycling events and organizations, and works with alternative transportation nonprofit groups.

Our staff of experienced cyclists can help you get involved in the cycling community as well as recommend local rides.

NYC Velo also supports various local and regional race teams, both on and off road. We proudly sponsor the Johnathan Adler, Merril Lynch, and NYVelocity teams.

Additionally, NYC Velo sponsors a team of elite mountain and cyclocross racers under the shop’s banner. The NYC Velo Racing team consists of Todd Cassan, Troy Ostrander, and owner Andrew Crooks.

Come in and see what we are all about!

Once a year

Shop Summary:
I purchased a bike there last year, they were very helpful then, and eager to show me all their bikes. I thought, wow great service. As time passed, parts break, some under warranty still and I kept showing up with little defects or things that should be covered by warranty. I didn't expect a free ride or anything, but there are many times where they straight up charged for every little repair. I was really turned off, my frame had the Velo NYC sticker on it, yet when I come in the owner treats returning customers as if they were strangers. I bought tools, tires, almost the whole nine. I invested 2500.00 into this company and their customer service is horrible.

Customer Service:
I think his name is Andrew, he is very selective of who he wants to speak to, few times I stand there waiting to be helped, he wouldn't so much as to look up and acknowledge a returning customer, but when his buddy came in it was peaches and cream.

I'm so through with their customer service, the only people who actually provide any are the sales people and they are super nice. I've seen many mechanics come and go, and I am starting to see why. I even tipped him once or twice. One thing is for sure, I am never going back nor would I recommend any of my friends going to that little elitist club.

Other Comments:
Discriminate much? Maybe a sign like "First time buyers, or friends only" would save undesirable customers from all this nonsense and cost.

Shop Summary:
I own 6 Bikes for different purposes, for different racing and for mountain biking and normal uses etc.
Normally My choice of bike shop is either Gotham Bike shop (THE BEST - there are 4 stores) or Sid's Bike shop (there are 2)
But for the bike I wanted NYC velo had one in their stock - only because it wasn't a major major brand - sids and gotham has the most number of high end brand. and gotham was out of stock at the moment i wanted to buy it.
So with no choice left i went to NYC velo.
I bought it and went home. 2 days later when i rode it for the second time i noticed some problems with the bike and went back to get it fixed.

there are about 7 workers and all of them were alright except one named Andrew - who also happens to be the owner.
He started screaming at me saying there is nothing wrong with the bike. but the other workers conceded that there were something wrong with the bike but couldn't say it in front of their boss - andrew. Although in the end, he ended up letting me exchange, it took 2 days and each time i went they treated me like a nuance. they gave me " I got your money so whatever" attitude.

I WON'T EVER go back there again. Gotham bike and Sid's or if i can't find other places ill rather order online even though for bike, trying out in person is of utmost importance.

The worst possible service i've ever got including automobile repair experience.

******************
IT WAS *GREAT* until THERE were some problems and then the true side of this store came out. Sid's and Gotham never lose their smile let alone scream and curse.
******************

Beware.

Customer Service:
Worst Ever! including autoshop repair experience... that says alot about it.
The owner's attitude is VERY BAD

Other Comments:
Don't go here. there are lots of good alternatives

Shop Summary:
This shop is kind of a joke (actually - better not call it a "shop" in the presence of an "associate" or else you get dirty looks; They think of themselves as a "boutique").

Customer Service:
Every time I walk into this place, I feel like I'm crashing a party being thrown by the cool kids. I went there last weekend to look for a skewer cap. "A skewer what?" was the response I received with a curled lip and raised eyebrow. After explaining to them what a skewer cap was, these guys actually tried to make me buy the skewer AND the cap when all I needed was a cap. If this had been a real bike shop, I would have actually gotten the cap I needed without the attitude. Oh wait... my mistake - this place is a boutique.

Why not go to a real bike shop like Bicycle Habitat on Lafayette. The people there are always willing to help without attitude. And they won't try to push some "boutique" brand on you if you don't need it. I got my skewer cap and spring for 50 cents at Bicycle Habitat from a really nice sales person whom you can tell actually rides and doesn't sit behind a counter polishing their bikes in the mirror all day. Don't get me wrong, I like nice shiny expensive bike gear and gadgets, but sometimes I go into a bike shop without the intention of dropping a couple Benjamins.

Other Comments:

Anyways, I don't work in a bike shop, I just thought these guys were a bunch of wanker poseurs with way too much attitude.

Shop Summary:
This is a really decent bike shop, which is really hard to find in NYC. The guys are nice, the owner is young(-ish) and there all the time. He made a conscious decision to abandon the low end, so there are no bikes less than around $500. Above that, there's a decent range of bikes -- bianchis, felts, konas, etc. No specialized, giant, or trek.

Customer Service:
I bought a mtn bike there, and they were great about demos and subsequent minor fixes. I also took my road bike there for a major tune-up and they did a great job. But most important, they're very friendly and have a good customer-service attitude.
