Racer Shop Summary: One of the oldest bike shops in Bend. They have 2 locations within (for some reason) 3 miles of each other. They sell all kinds of bikes, even some BMX stuff. Cannondale, Giant, Specialized, Electra. Customer Service: Inconsistent. These 2 shops have a lot of new staff every year. Rarely do I talk to the same person twice in a row. One guy will be totally cool, and have great answers to my questions, the next may try to sell me a part that's completely incompatible with my bike - I never really know what to expect. Sometimes it feels like I'm being conned.
This another shop that I hear about from friends who say they bought a bike and use the free tune-ups and then pay another shop to correct bad adjustments.
To their credit, Chris at the Westside location is awesome. He's very sure about his abilities and his knowledge, and he's pretty mellow about it. Unfortunately, he's just one guy out of 10 or 15. Hutch's is lucky to have him, and I don't think they fully realize it.
Other Comments: The high employee turnover concerns me - it usually means that the management makes a habit of hiring expendable people, or that they aren't smart enough to pay good people to stick around.
I wonder who it is at The Source Weekly that gets paid off every year to make Hutch's "Bend's #1 Bike Shop".

Weekend Warrior Shop Summary: Best all-around shop in town. Definitely the best family-oriented shop in town. Good service. If you're not happy with something, tell them...and they'll figure it out and make it right. Good selection of rental bikes. Good brands. Down to earth. Definitely one of the top three shops in Bend. Customer Service: Good people. Good service. They take the time to explain things and figure out what's going on with your bike. Other Comments: Sure, in the summer there might be one "kid" working there who doesnt' quite get something right...but that's the nature of the business at ANY shop, especially busy ones like this one. Like I said, if you're not happy, they'll make it right for you.

Cross Country Rider Shop Summary: Hutch's (http://www.hutchsbicycles.com/) has details. To summarize, Hutch's is a five store chain in Oregon; I'm only familiar with their two Bend stores and use the westside one almost exclusively, so this review is specific to that location. I've used a dozen odd LBSes in Oregon, Washington, California, and Pennsylvania over the years and Hutch's is easily the best I've worked with. Knowledgeable staff, a laid back atmosphere, and a willingess to work with customers on whatever level they're at. Customer Service: As good as it gets, in my experience. I do nearly all of my own wrenching and mainly use bike shops as parts suppliers. It's quite nice to work with a store which will let you walk into their back rooms and look through parts or hand you a bin of shims and let you find what you need. On the rare occasions when I've known more than the mechanics do they've even listened to what I'm saying.
I've been in and out of the store a lot and have seen a many good things and no bad ones. The staff regularly goes the extra mile, ranging from swapping grips for me when I was in a hurry before a race, cleaning the rear derailleur on my girlfriend's bike for free, fixing a flat for a roadie who didn't have his wallet with him and letting the guy come back and pay later, and being amazingly nice to a mentally challenged fellow. Other Comments: So far I've had excellent luck with finding what I've needed in stock on various walk ins, though it helps the westside store has a spoke cutter. Prices are reasonable and sometimes even better than mail order. Zero hassles when I replaced a rear shock under Cane Creek's trade in program and excellent work on fork overhaul when I got crunched for time and dropped off the bike (sans wheels) along with a new set of seals and bushings which I'd been planning to put in.
Hutch's was voted best bike store in town for 2007 in the Bend weekly. Well deserved in my opinion.
