Shop Summary:
Clean bike shop with decent bikes. Does not have a wide selection of cycling shoes.

Customer Service:
Employees seem offish. They sold me a screw for $1.00. The screw did not even fit the bottom of my cycling shoes. I later went to a different shop in the same town and they gave me a screw for free and the screw actually fit. What kind of bike shop charges a customer for one little screw? On another occurrence, I took my bicycle in to the shop to ask about a weird sound coming from the iDrive area on my GT iDrive and they told me they'd charge me $60 just to look at it. I realized, on my own, where the grinding sound was coming from, applied lube to the area, and solved the problem.

Other Comments:
The ideal bike shop, in my opinion, would identify the problem for the customer and let the customer decide if they want to fix the problem themselves or let the shop do it. There wouldn't be any "It'll cost $60 for us to identify the problem." I'll take my business elsewhere.

By saying "$60 just to look at" one can understate what that entails. GT's iDrive is a proprietary linkage system that is rather complex by design. Here is a link to the service instructions with exploded diagram and photos. http://www.gtbicycles.com/CMS/tech/2006_iDrive_supplement.pdf

In order to diagnose a creaking problem a mechanic can't just put their ear next to the creaking sound and say "It needs grease right here." That may be a feasible solution for someone to perform on their own bike but by asking a shop to diagnose a creaking sound in a linkage system the shop us usually agreeing to disassemble the linkage system, clean and service the threads, inspect all interfaces for wear or damage, if they see damage they would then contact the customer to discuss a solution, if not they would re lubricate everything that needs lubrication with whatever the manufacturer calls for, assemble with the specified torque measurements, and then test ride the bike to ensure the creak is gone. Rinse and repeat if necessary.

All of that requires looking up the technical specifications for that bike and the proper service steps, lubricants, and torque measurements (especially on a linkage system). Considering GT iDrive is proprietary and Kulshan cycles is not a GT dealer it is going to require extra research and extra close attention to detail. Likely the Head Mechanic or a well seasoned Mechanic is going to take on the job.

By inspecting the bike they are looking for things that could potentially lead to failure or accelerated wear. Especially with a linkage system, you don't want failure when you are out on the trail. Kulshan in my experience takes pride in their work and are not going to half ass the job. If there is a part that need to be replaced that just makes the job easier. They would still take all the same steps but they get to put in a part that is brand new and not dirty and beginning to wear.

I recently paid Kulshan $20 to inspect a BB creak. They di
